Brussels, 4th December – At the sidelines of the EU Transport Council meeting, eight countries launched the eSAF Early Movers Coalition to decarbonize Europe’s aviation industry. Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain are aiming to support the uptake and scale-up of synthetic aviation fuels (eSAF) production via the double-auction mechanism.
Following the announcement of the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) last month, the coalition intends to mobilize at least EUR 500 million in 2026 for a pilot tender to bring European eSAF projects to FID and to make the clean fuel available in time for the eSAF mandate starting from 2030.
Markus Exenberger, Executive Director of the H2Global Foundation: “We welcome the joint initiative by Commissioner Tzitzikostas and the member states to use the double-auction mechanism as an efficient tool to pool funds and enabling a short-term market creation for eSAF.”
The H2Global Foundation, together with Project SkyPower and Hydrogen Europe, has supported member states in considering a swift and well-tailored approach to address the need for eSAF in Europe.
H2Global serves as a catalytic instrument using limited public capital to overcome early market failures, coordinate supply and demand, and accelerate the shift toward commercially viable clean commodities.
